Over 300
species of annual, biennial and perennial geraniums, some evergreen, grow all
over the world mainly in cool-temperate regions. The leaves are on long stalks,
broadly circular in outline but usually palmately lobed. They make small, showy
clumps with pink to blue or purple, 5-petalled flowers. Cranesbills, so-called
for the shape of their small, dry fruitlets, are often confused with species of
the genus Pelargonium, which are also commonly known as ‘geraniums’.
Symmetrical flowers are their chief point of distinction from the pelargoniums,
which produce irregularly shaped flowers. With their attractive flowers they
are useful for rock gardens, ground covers and borders. Compact species and
hybrids such as ‘Brookside’ and Geranium goldmanii are also good for
containers.
