As a young plant, this species from western China starts slowly but if left unpruned will cover a small tree 15–20 ft (4.5–6 m) high. The leaves are quite large with 5 to 9 downy, slightly toothed leaflets. The pendent, bell-shaped flowers are borne in panicles up to 10 in (25 cm) long; they are predominantly yellow, fading to parchment. The 4 petals are tightly recurved at the tips.
