This robust evergreen species is
native to New Zealand and climbs up
to 30 ft (9 m) with a main stem up to
4 in (10 cm) in diameter. The rather
rigid, lustrous green leaves are divided
into 3 leaflets. From late spring to
early summer it bears fragrant white
flowers up to 4 in (10 cm) across with
yellow centers, frequently tipped with
pinkish purple. The blooms are followed
by downy seed heads in fall (autumn).
‘Purity’ is a selected male form that
bears very large white flowers in spring.
It may spread to over 15 ft (4.5 m).
