A native of China
introduced to the West early in the
nineteenth century, this species in
its typical form is now rarely seen
in gardens, but it is one of the most
important parents of the large-flowered
hybrids. A deciduous climber to
about 6 ft (1.8 m) high, it bears white
to pale lilac flowers up to 8 in (20
cm) wide from spring to fall (autumn).
'Candida' has pure white flowers.
