This late-flowering clematis bears its velvety purple flowers entirely on the new growth in late summer and early fall (autumn). It can be pruned hard in early spring. This makes it one of the best cultivars for growing among the branches of climbing roses. It is easier to prune the roses if the clematis can simply be cut out of the way.
